Programs

Boys & Girls Clubs of America provides tested and proven nationally recognized programs that address today's most pressing youth issues, teaching young people the skills they need to succeed in life. 

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the South Bay have taken these programs and customized them to best address the needs of the youth in our communities.  We offer youth a well-rounded program of activities, providing opportunities for positive growth and development.

Character development is at the heart of what we do each and every day. Our Character & Leadership Programs empower youth to support and positively influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image and participate in the democratic process.  These programs enable youth to develop leadership skills and become responsible caring citizens by providing opportunities for planning and decision-making.  Character and leadership programs celebrate our national heritage, while teaching youth to respect their own and others’ cultural identities, an essential component in Los Angeles’ multi-cultural community.  All programs offer age appropriate activities and skills building.  Programs within this area include Torch ClubTEENSupreme® Keystone Club and Youth of the Year

Power Hour: Making minutes count!  A   Comprehensive homework assistance and tutoring program. POWER HOUR is designed to raise the academic profeciency of our Club members.

Healthy Kids Programs in the Health & Life Skills area develop a young person's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.  These initiatives help youth achieve and maintain healthy, active lifestyles. Comprehensive prevention programs address alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity.  Health programs address dental care and vision. 

Life skills program provide safety awareness and a program targeted to young men that focuses on responsibility and positive behavior.  Programs within this area include SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training), Passport to Manhood, Street SMART, Cavity-Free Zone, Sight for Students and the Kids In Control Safety Awareness Program.

SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) is a nationally acclaimed comprehensive prevention program that helps young people resist alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity.  The program's components include SMART Kids (ages 6-9), Start SMART (ages 10-12), Stay SMART (ages 13-15) and SMART Parents, for parents of Club members participating in SMART Moves.

Street SMART initiative consists of three components designed to help young people ages 11-13 effectively resist gangs and violence, resolve conflicts and be positive peer helpers in their communities. It also allows them the opportunity to hold annual events that celebrate anti-gang,  anti-violence themes. Street SMART serves as the National Project for Torch Clubs annually, and is available for all Boys & Girls Clubs to use.

The Gang Prevention/Intervention through Targeted Outreach Program is vital in a community located within the boundaries of a City of Los Angelesgang injunction area.  This community-based program's goal is to keep young people between the ages of 6 and18 from becoming involved in gangs. The intervention component helps youth already involved with gangs to leave that lifestyle.  Community mobilization, recruitment strategies, effective programming and case management tools are used to direct young people to positive alternatives

Arts Programs help young people enhance self-expression and creativity, develop multicultural appreciation, provide exposure to and develop skills in crafts and visual, performing and literary arts.  Programs and activities include photography, visual arts and dance.  Recent studies have found that youth who study the arts do better in school.  The Club plans to continue the Day Academy, a pilot program that provides art courses to two local elementary school classes.  Students visit the Club twice a week and participate in visual and performing arts instruction as part of their regular school curriculum
 
Sports, Fitness & Recreation are staples to any youth development program.  These programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.  The Boys & Girls Clubs of the South Bay offer drop-in game rooms, a full-sized gym in the Harbor City facility, in-door hockey, flag football and basketball.  A Teen Center provides teenagers with their personal space separate from the younger children, respecting their need for independence, while providing nearby guidance and support.  Programs in this area include Adventure Club and Hooked on Fishing
 
An outgrowth of the popular and effective SMART Moves program, SMART Girls is a health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program for girls ages 10-15. The program is designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential.
 
Club Science, an exciting program in partnership with Northrop Grumman, incorporates various science activities into our Education & Career Programs.  A vital program in a community riddled with socio-economic and education constraints, these programs help youth create aspirations for the future, providing opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement, especially around the areas of science and technology.  A comprehensive and integrated program, Club Science’s teen activities include Education & Career Program Activities and the Race to Space Camp Competition.
